Being Smart in 10 Different Ways

in Cognitive, Emotional, Language, Social

Our children’s brains are growing so rapidly, it’s almost scary!

Most parents these days are extremely concerned with high achievement. Why?

Because most parents believe that high achievement means you’re really smart.

And if you’re really smart, you’re going to get into a good college.

And if you get into a good college, you’re going to make lots of money.

So, duh! Let’s get this brain started!

Let’s get reading! Let’s get computing!

What most people do not realize is that the brain is busy performing thousands of separate tasks for every one movement or thought. Therefore, as your child interacts with the world on any level, they are using and developing that wonderful “commodity” known as intelligence.

Cognition (as DAP refers to it) involves a multitude of tasks, 10 of which are:

  1. Memory
  2. Attention
  3. Focus
  4. Speed
  5. Language
  6. Spatial Reasoning
  7. Problem Solving
  8. Fluid Intelligence
  9. Stress
  10. Reaction Time

As you can see, the ABC’s and 123’s of academia are only a small portion of cognitive functioning, also known as “being smart.”

Check out the Frontal Lobe page to see all of the different activities that grow your child’s cognition!
